Have you tried cleaning the printer nozzle? Another possibility is that your machine needs a new printhead. Below is the link to the User Guide for the DM500.
I hope this helps!

I have a fairly new PB K700 Mail Station which I use about three or four times a week.
I recently put in my third (PB) refill ink cartridge.
The printer is now leaving gaps at the top of the printed postage indecia.
It doesn't seem to affect the main body of the indecia where all the info is but it looks bad.
I tried using the print head cleaning cycle about ten times in a row with
no effect whatsoever. Do the print heads on these machines go bad that quickly!?
My last PB machine ran for years and years with no such problem.
Is it possible to replace the print head? I can't see it.

The print head can be replaced, but it shouldn't need replaced so soon unless it was damaged during setup of your meter. When using the maintenance mode with my machine, a DM200, I have found that it is not always necessary going through the entire purge cycle - A, B, C and D. The print problem is sometimes remedied using only one or two step(s), and then returns to the previous state if I continue purging the system. If you have the same maintenance options (purge A, B, C and D), I would recommend testing the print pattern after each phase of the cycle.
