Discounts on Standard Mail+Periodicals

It is my understanding that this fall, the USPS will offer discounts on Standard Mail that have the IMB's. Do you know what the discounts will be? Also, what about periodicals. How much more of a discount will be offered for businesses who implement the IMB's early? The reason I ask is I am not sure if it is worth investing in a $1200 flash card for our printer at this time (this year is difficult for all businesses) or if I should wait since we have until 2011 to fully comply. Please let me know your thoughts.

Thanks,
Chris

Re: Discounts on Standard Mail+Periodicals

Hello Chris,

Yes, beginning in November 29th later this year, they will be offering you $0.003 off each First-Class automation rate letter, card or flat in your mailing, or $0.001 off each piece in Standard or Periodicals mailings, as long as you meet all the other requirements for what they call the Full Service version of the Intelligent Mail Barcode.  Essentially that means that you also have a unique serial number for each piece included in the barcodes, and that you submit the information that is required on the postal documentation for your mailing electronically on the USPS's PostalOne! system.

That's 3/10 of a cent on First-Class Automation and 1/10 of a cent off Standard or Periodicals mail.  If you have mail list management software such as Pitney Bowes SmartMailer that helps you maintain your addresses and presort your mail, it should handle most of the Full Service requirements for you.

Ultimately whether or not it makes sense for you depends on how many pieces you have in your presorted mailings, and whether or not you think you could benefit from some of the additional services that the Intelligent Mail Barcode could enable for you (for example, mailpiece tracking or change of address information).
