new rates and heavier than $0.44

I updated my K700 with new postal rates -- standard letters now weigh and post @ $0.44.  However whenever I put a heavier envelope on the scale and get an amount more than $0.44, post and send it, I'm getting back the item postage due, $0.44 short.  This has happened a half-dozen times now.  Why isn't my scale calculating the correct rates for heavier envelopes.  They are standard sized.

Re: new rates and heavier than $0.44

Starrjoe,

Thank you for your question, this is a fairly common question that our customers bring to us.  Part of how the USPS now classifies the mail is not just the size of the envelope itself, but the thickness as well.

In order to be classified as a Letter, the piece must now fit into these dimensions:

Length: Minimum - 5 inches

             Maximum - 11.5 inches

Height: Minimum - 3.5 inches

            Maximum - 6.125 inches

AND, it can be no thicker than 0.25 inches.

If your mail piece exceed any of these dimensions it would be then considered a Flat, and would require another $0.44 of postage.  Because your machine is not able to decide the class of the mail for you, we do offer a template to assist you:

Thanks again,

Ben
